Scholarship Interview Preparation: Questions and Practice Plan

Last updated: 18 October 2026

Many competitive scholarships include an interview after shortlisting — Chevening, Fulbright, Commonwealth (for some nominators), MEXT, GKS, Türkiye Scholarships and most PhD positions. Interviews are usually 15–40 minutes, online or at an embassy, with two to five panel members. This guide gives you the question types, sample questions and a practice plan.

What the panel is testing

  • That you wrote your application yourself and understand it.
  • Clarity of goals and how this program helps you reach them.
  • Leadership, teamwork and resilience — usually through examples.
  • Knowledge of the country, university or program.
  • For government scholarships: how you will contribute when you return home.

Sample questions

Motivation and fit

  • Tell us about yourself.
  • Why this program and this university? Why not one in your own country?
  • Why should we choose you over other strong candidates?

Goals and impact

  • Where do you see yourself five years after graduating?
  • How will this degree help your community or country?
  • What will you do if you do not get this scholarship?

Experience and behaviour

  • Describe a time you led a team through a difficult situation.
  • Tell us about a failure and what you learned.
  • Give an example of how you built a relationship with someone very different from you.

Research positions

  • Explain your master’s thesis in two minutes to a non-specialist.
  • What is the main limitation of your previous research?
  • How would you approach the first six months of this project?

Answer with the STAR method

For experience questions, structure each answer as Situation (one sentence), Task (your responsibility), Action (what you did — the longest part), Result (outcome, with numbers if possible, and what you learned). Aim for 1–2 minutes per answer.

Practice plan (two weeks)

  1. Day 1–2: reread your application, essays and the selection criteria. Write down every claim you made — you may be asked about any of them.
  2. Day 3–5: prepare STAR stories for leadership, teamwork, failure, conflict and impact. Five good stories cover most questions.
  3. Day 6–8: research the program, modules, professors and the host country.
  4. Day 9–12: do three mock interviews with a friend or mentor. Record one on video and watch it.
  5. Day 13–14: prepare two questions to ask the panel, test your camera, microphone and internet, and plan your outfit and route.

On the day

  • Join or arrive 10–15 minutes early. For online interviews, use a quiet room, neutral background and a charged device.
  • It is fine to pause and think before answering, or to ask the panel to repeat a question.
  • Be honest. If you do not know something, say so and explain how you would find out.
  • End by thanking the panel. A short thank-you email afterwards is appropriate for PhD interviews.
