Short-term research and internship programs range from a few weeks to a full year. The right length depends on your degree timeline, your goals and what you can commit to.
Under 3 months: test the water
Summer research internships and schools (typically 8–12 weeks) are perfect for undergraduates. They give you lab experience, a reference letter and a feel for a country or field without pausing your degree.
3–6 months: a real project
A semester-long placement lets you complete a defined project, often for your thesis. Many universities allow you to earn credit for it.
6–9 months: deeper experience
Six-month research internships and traineeships are long enough to produce results worth presenting or publishing, and are common between a bachelor’s and a master’s.
9–12 months and longer
Year-long placements, exchange years and fellowships are best when you want to build a strong network abroad or test a PhD path.
