How to Find Funded PhD Positions on LinkedIn (Without Paying Agents)

Updated October 19, 2026

Many funded PhD positions are announced first by the professor who has the money — often on LinkedIn, sometimes days or weeks before they reach job boards. Here is how we find those posts for ScholarsChapter, and how you can do the same without falling for agents who repost them with a fee attached.

1. Search posts, not jobs

On LinkedIn, search for phrases such as “PhD position” deadline, “fully funded PhD” my group or “we are hiring” PhD, then choose the Posts tab and sort by Latest. Use the Author job title filter with “Professor”, “Associate Professor” or “Assistant Professor” — that removes most reposts by consultants and aggregator pages.

2. Follow the right people

  • Professors and group leaders whose papers you cite.
  • University and department pages, graduate schools and PhD networks (MSCA, ELLIS, Max Planck schools).
  • Research institutes you would like to work at.

Turn on notifications for the five or ten most relevant people — calls often close within four to six weeks.

3. Always verify on the official page

A LinkedIn post is an announcement, not the application. Before you apply, open the official vacancy on the university’s job portal and check the deadline, eligibility, salary and documents. On ScholarsChapter we mark a listing Info verified only after that check; positions we could only see in the supervisor’s post are marked needs verification.

4. Avoid paid “agents”

Genuine PhD positions are free to apply for. If someone asks for a fee to “process” or “guarantee” a position they did not create, walk away. Our scam checker lists the warning signs.

5. Message well — or not at all

Many professors ask candidates to apply through the portal rather than by direct message, and some say they will not accept connection requests from strangers. If a post invites emails, send a short, specific message with your CV — see our guide and templates.
