MBBS Abroad: How to Check a Medical School Is Recognised Before You Apply

Studying MBBS abroad can be affordable and rewarding — but only if your degree lets you sit the licensing exam and practise where you want to work. Before paying any fee, work through these checks.

1. Find the school in the World Directory of Medical Schools

The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) lists medical schools worldwide. A listing is a basic first check — if a school is not listed, stop and ask why.

2. Confirm recognition with your home regulator

Every country decides which foreign medical degrees it accepts. In Pakistan this is the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC); in India it is the National Medical Commission (NMC). Check their current lists and rules — including any requirements on course length, internship and language of instruction — before you enrol.

3. Plan your licensing route early

  • United States: the USMLE pathway via ECFMG certification — check ECFMG’s current requirements for your school
  • United Kingdom: the PLAB / UKMLA route with the General Medical Council
  • Australia: the AMC examinations
  • Home country: the licensing exam set by your national regulator

4. Compare the real total cost

Add up tuition for all years, hostel, food, health insurance, visa renewals and travel. Ask whether fees are fixed for the whole program and whether the clinical years are taught in English.

5. Look for funded routes

Government scholarships and quota places can make medicine free or much cheaper. Browse the MBBS & Medical category on ScholarsChapter and always confirm details on the official website.
