PhD Study in Spain: A Guide for International Students

Written by ScholarsChapter · Last updated 19 October 2026 · Europe

Spain combines a growing research system with salaried predoctoral contracts that make a PhD a job rather than a cost.

PhD opportunities in Spain

Why do a PhD in Spain?

  • Government FPU and FPI contracts pay a salary with social security
  • Strong research centres such as CSIC institutes and Severo Ochoa centres
  • Lower living costs than northern Europe outside Madrid and Barcelona

Universities in Spain

Well-known research universities and institutes for PhD study in Spain include:

  • University of Barcelona
  • Autonomous University of Madrid
  • Complutense University of Madrid
  • Pompeu Fabra University
  • University of Valencia

Choose a university by your supervisor and research group, not the overall ranking — fit with the group decides most PhD outcomes.

PhD structure

PhD programmes are run by PhD schools. There is little coursework; you follow an individual research plan approved each year and defend a thesis before a tribunal. An International Doctorate mention requires a research stay abroad.

Fees and funding

Fees: Public universities charge modest tutela (supervision) fees each year. Contract holders usually have fees covered or reimbursed.

Main funded routes: FPU, FPI, regional predoctoral contracts, university and research-institute contracts.

Official starting points: FPU (Ministry of Science) · AEI

See PhD funding by country to compare routes across 46 countries, or estimate your budget with the study cost calculator.

Applying for a PhD in Spain

Most funded places are tied to a project or a supervisor. Find a group, agree a project, and apply for admission to the PhD programme and for an FPU or FPI contract (FPI contracts are attached to specific research projects). A master's degree (or 300 ECTS) is required.

Language: Many science and engineering groups work in English; humanities and social sciences often need Spanish.

Your application checklist

  • CV with research experience and any publications
  • Research proposal or statement written for the project or supervisor — see our research proposal guide
  • Master's (and undergraduate) transcripts and degree certificates; for Pakistanis, HEC-attested copies
  • Two or three academic references — see our recommendation letter guide
  • English test score or proof of English-medium study, if required
  • Interview preparation — see our interview guide

Student visas and work

Visa: Non-EU students and researchers apply for a student or researcher visa at the Spanish consulate, then a TIE residence card after arrival.

Working during your PhD: Predoctoral contract holders are employees. Student-visa holders may work part time with permission.

After your PhD

Non-EU graduates can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business (up to 12 months, renewable in some cases).
